The Long Night of the Stars at the Thuringian State Observatory was a great success: We welcomed about 960 guests to the observatory. The event began at 5 p.m and lasted until midnight. There was a rush for the free tickets to the lectures and dome tours right from the start.
There was plenty to do for all age groups and interests: making constellation models and mini-telescopes, hands-on science stations run by the DLR_School_Lab Jena, and the chance to admire the night sky together - which is still particularly dark in Tautenburg. The nighttime atmosphere on the observatory grounds is a special experience.
We would like to thank all our visitors for coming. A heartfelt thank you also goes to our colleagues from the Volkssternwarte Urania Jena e.V. They brought portable telescopes so that visitors could take a look at planets and other celestial objects for themselves. Just as darkness fell, the sky cleared, and we were able to see Saturn, for example, through a telescope. We'd also like to thank the DLR_School_Lab team for the great experiments, which kept the guests entertained all evening.
Next year, the Thüringer Landessternwarte will host an open house in in early summer. The date will be announced at a later time. We invite you to join us again for the next Long Night of the Stars in the fall of 2028.
If you'd like to hear more lectures on the latest findings in astronomical research, please join us for the Long Night of Science on November 20, 2026, in Jena at Helmholtzweg 5, Lecture Hall 2.
