GRB 980329

Detection of the I-band GRB afterglow

The following IAUC was submitted (IAU Circ. 6864):

"I-band images obtained on March 29.8 - 30.0 UT, using the Tautenburg Schmidt telescope equipped with the Schmidt focus CCD camera, show an object with magnitude of about I = 20 (estimated, not measured) at the position of the fading radio source reported by Taylor et al. (GRB Coordinate Network Circular #40; see http://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/gcn/gcn3_archive.html) at R.A. = 7h02m38s, Decl. = 38o50'44" (+/- 1", equinox 2000.0). This object was no more visible on I-band images taken on March 31.8 - 31.9 UT with the Tautenburg telescope (I > 21). It was also not found on an I-band image taken on April 1.85 UT with the Calar Alto 2.2-m telescope equipped with CAFOS (I > 21). No R-band counterpart of this object is seen on Tautenburg images taken on March 29.8 - 30.0 UT (R > 22)."

Left: R-band image taken on March 29.8 UT (combination of 7 frames a 120 sec integration time). Right: R-band image taken on March 30.0 UT (combination of 22 frames a 120 sec integration time). The pixel scale is 1.2 arcsec/pixel. The circle approximately represents the BeppoSAX error circle (radius 60 arcsec) reported by J. in 't Zand et al. (IAUC 6854).

I-band image taken on March 29.8 UT (combination of 7 frames a 120 sec integration time). Right: I-band image taken on March 30.0 UT (combination of 22 frames a 120 sec integration time). The object mentioned above is indicated.

I-band image taken on April 01.85 UT using the Calar Alto 2.2-m telescope (CAFOS). The transient source is no more visible.
