GRB 971227

A near-infrared survey of the error box of GRB 971227

1. preliminary data
--------------

The 1.5 arcmin radius error box of GRB 971227 (Piro et al., IAU Circ. 6797) was imaged with the Calar Alto 2.2-m telescope on January 9.1 UT using one of the MAGIC near-infrared cameras. The total integration time was 5000 seconds in K' and 5000 seconds in J, centered at RA, DEC (J2000) = 12:57:15.0, 59:24:02.

Shown here are preliminary results of the image reduction.

Two red objects are indicated. Both have only a faint counterpart on the Keck R-band image published by Djorgovski et al. (see http://astro.caltech.edu/~george/grb/grb971227.html ). Coordinates are (+/- 2"):

Object A: RA, DEC (J2000) = 12:57:10.3, 59:24:14
Object B: RA, DEC (J2000) = 12:57:22.8, 59:23:48

Both objects might have K' = 19.0 +/- 1.0.

Left J-band image, right K'-band image taken on January 9.1 UT, Calar Alto Observatory, Spain, using the 2.2-m telescope equipped with the MAGIC near-infrared camera (wide-field mode, 1.62" pixels). The circle approximately represents the BeppoSAX error circle (radius 90 arcsec) reported by Piro et al. (IAUC 6797). The objects mentioned above are indicated.

2. final results of the image processing
--------------------------------

Shown here are the final results of the image reduction. The images were reduced using a special sampling technique developed by one of us (B.S.). The pixel scale of the final images is 0.8" per pixel. Note the remarkable increase in image quality of the final results compared to the preliminary results.

J and K'-band data, including photometry, will be published after NIR data from a second epoch survey are available.
