About 10 km north in Jena are three castles: the "Alte Schloss", where the conference will be built, the "Renaissance -Schloss" and the "Rokoko-Schloss". The three castles are in a park, about 90 m above the river Saale overlooking the Saale valley. The hills behind the river are the Tautenburg forest, where on is highest peak, the Thueringer Landessternwarte is located, the host institution of the conference. According to the legend, the view from this terrace inspired the founders of the observatory to select the Tautenburg forest as a possible site for the observatory.
