The Pulpit Rock The Pulpit Rock

The 3rd Tautenburg Course for Advanced Astronomical Observations:

Echelle Spectroscopy

September 20th to October 1st, 2018

One of the most exciting recent discoveries in astronomy is the existence of a huge variety of extrasolar planets orbiting other stars, including numerous multi-planet systems. Exoplanets can be very different to those found in our Solar System, and range from the so-called Hot Jupiter and mini-Neptune gas planets to large rocky planets (super-Earths). Recently the Senate of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) has established the Priority Programme Exploring the Diversity of Extrasolar Planets (SPP 1992) that aims to explore such diversity and understand its origins. The observational part of this program includes the detection of exoplanets and observational characterization of their properties (e.g. orbit, mass, radius, atmosphere). An important part of the observational program is connected with high-resolution spectroscopy. In order to educate students in this technique the Thüringer Landessternwarte Tautenburg organizes an advanced astronomical observing course on Echelle spectroscopy. The course includes lectures, observations, and data reduction. Lectures and training on how to reduce the Echelle spectra will be given in the afternoon, and observations are carried out during the night. The students will work in teams and have opportunity to conduct their own research programs using the 2-m Alfred Jensch in Tautenburg. In case of bad weather, we will provide archival data that the participants can use.

Our course aims at graduate and PhD students who wish to gain experience and knowledge about Echelle spectroscopy. While the primary aim of the course is to educate the students of institutes participating in the Priority Programme, guests from other institutes, particularly those that intend to collaborate with institutes from the SPP are highly welcome. The registration is open until April 15th, 2018. If you are interested in attending the course, please send an email to the contact address given below providing the following information:

  • Name,
  • Institution/university address,
  • Current status (undergraduate, Ph.D. student, etc.),
  • Scientific interests.

  • Accommodation:

A limited number of rooms are available in our guesthouse to stay at the observatory during the course. The costs will be 3-5 Euros per night.
